How to Choose Sunscreen

How to choose sunscreen

Here are some tips on how to choose sunscreen. These tips will help you select the best product to protect your skin from the damaging effects of the sun. Remember that all skin types are susceptible to the harmful effects of over sun exposure, no matter what color.

UV rays are responsible for 90% of photo-aging and are the leading cause of skin cancers.  For these reasons, it is extremely important that we all use a sunscreen daily.

Types of Sunscreen

Chemical Sunscreen

There are two types of sunscreens.  The chemical version (which we have been warned against using) works by absorbing UV rays while the physical blockers reflect the sun’s rays.  The combined ingredients in the chemical version can release its own free radicals, which subjects the skin to even greater damage.  Even more importantly, they may not actually protect against UVA rays, which are linked to Melanoma and photo-aging by degrading the collagen and elastin in our skin.

Physical Blockers

Physical blockers, such as titanium dioxide and zinc oxide, are the two most commonly used blockers. These are safe and protect against the full UV spectrum.

Sunscreen Facts

Studies over the years have shown that a sun protection factor of 30 blocks approximately 97% of all ultraviolet rays.  The rating of 15 means that 93% of UV rays are blocked and anything higher than 30 still remains in the 97% or 98% protection range.  Rhonda Allison says that an SPF 30 not only adds to the health of the skin, but it is also an important final step to skin care AND the most appropriate SPF rating.

In 1999, the FDA recommended that any sunscreen higher than an SPF 30 be labeled at “30+” mostly to prevent people from having a false sense of security that might lead them to spend more time in the sun.

Rhonda Allison also believes that applying additional topical antioxidants prior to applying SPF will help to reduce sun damage and free radicals, while providing healthy support for the skin.
